Types of Online Education

The type of school that peaks your interest will determine how much you can complete online. Universities and strictly online universities and colleges will offer the widest selection of online programs. Meanwhile, arts, culinary, technical and vocational schools may offer a number of online courses, but will likely require a larger number of on-campus classes. These areas of study incorporate many hands-on courses that cannot be done via a computer. The following are examples of types of schools that offer online programs.

Universities

Several colleges fall under the umbrella of a single university, which means the university can offer programs in a number of different fields. Universities are often the more reasonable options for credit transfers, too. If the university categorizes itself as an online university, it may have campuses in major cities for courses that cannot be completed online. Pay attention to in-state and out-of-state tuition rates, and speak to a staff member or counselor in the admissions or academics department regarding their policies concerning credit transfers. Also look into whether they have a satellite campus near you.

Art Schools

Online education through accredited art schools can be more limited because of the nature of the subject areas. Almost all arts programs contain classes in which material is taught through lectures, books, and discussions. These can be made available online because the instruction and the homework can be confined to a computer. However, other courses are visual and interactive. Performing arts is a prime example, but this applies to drawing, sculpting, painting, fashion design, interior design, culinary arts, and other programs that require students to create with their hands.

Technical Schools

Because many of the programs at technical schools are computer-based, your presence at a particular campus or in a physical classroom is not always necessary. Taking tech school courses online is a great option. Still, some projects and certain programs cannot be completed through telecommuting, and there is the issue of software as well. Be prepared to purchase mandatory software, or to take certain courses in a campus classroom where the necessary software, programs and other equipment are provided.

Vocational Schools

Business is a general yet popular area of study, and many vocational schools have great business programs that can get you on your way to a nice ownership, management, or creative business position. Perhaps you are considering the online education world because you wish to educate yourself in a business field with which you are already involved. It's a good option for working professionals.

Community Colleges

Community colleges are good places to begin your education when you are strapped for money or financial aid, or struggle to meet qualification standards at colleges and universities (because of a low grade point average or SAT scores, etc.) These are good places to take general education courses, and many opt to earn Associate's Degrees and available certifications at these schools before moving on to complete higher degrees at colleges or universities. These offer quality education at affordable rates with flexible schedules and a more relaxed environment.
